How to Get "Shark Tank" Ready

Infographic by InvestorPitches.com
in Women 2.0
Did you know there is a sea full of investors out there hunting for their cash worthy projects?  Finding them is not hard.  In fact having your stuff in order is really the only hard part.

Here's what investors (or potential business buyers want to see):

1.  Two solid years of financials or at least a pro forma.  They want to know that even if you don't have money, you certainly have a solid plan on how you're gonna use it.

2.  They want to know you know your market, inside and out.  That means you live, breathe and sleep it.  That kind of commitment to your customer translates as "passion" to an investor.  Something they ALL love to see.

3.  They want to know you have a place for them to fit in.  Sometimes the hunt becomes more exciting than the prize and that frankly translates into a giant waste of time for an investor.  What are you gonna do with that investor and his money once you get them?  Do you want his help developing opportunities, mentoring you or do you just want the money and have him take a seat on the comfy couch - let you do your thing?

The Groupon Instant Up-Sale by Voucher Number Technique

Most small business merchants simply accept the voucher number, plug it into the Groupon merchant center and "hope" this new client will buy more simply because they enjoyed their experience.   The problem is there is no urgency or immediate reason for the client to buy it today or buy it NOW.

Getting clients to buy more on the spot is not hard if you know how to add a small amount of urgency with finesse.   Here's a quick EZ technique I tech.  I call it:

Leveraging the Power of the Voucher Number

Step 1:  Ask the client if they knew they could "do more" with their voucher number.  Here's Ms. HowYouSayIt to help you with the words.

Step 2:  The client needs to check out with their voucher number and it can only be used once, right?  So basically, they can take advantage of their discount upon check out or not, but they don't get to think about it or use it later because you tell them your "system is simply not set up that way."

Give it a try and watch your sales double on the spot!

Purpose Driven Christmas Shopping That Creates American Jobs

How many times have you bought a Groupon or Living Social voucher?  If you're anything like me, you probably went crazy buying up these deals at first, but maybe now it's no longer setting your hair on fire.  Maybe there's a laser hair removal or car detail deal that interests you but you're not going out of your way to see the latest hot deal...right?

One of the biggest economic challenges we're facing in this country right now is lack of jobs and income.  So much as been and is manufactured in Asia simply because it's cheap.  What if this holiday season you made the choice to buy ONLY local deals and support the people in your community who create and maintain jobs for Americans?  How?  Welp...it's easy.  Almost all the offers on coupon sites like Groupon, Living Social, PopSugar, etc. are based on local services and products.  Why not make your holiday shopping purpose driven:  Help American Small Business Owners Maintain Jobs

Trust me, your kids will thank you for it.

3 EZ Steps to Figure Out Your Business's Value

As a Business Broker, I'd hear this question all the time: "How would I know what my business is worth if I wanted to sell it?"  Many times, getting an idea of what this figure is, will help a seller decide if he/she wishes to move forward with exploring the process of selling their business....or not.

We have lots of analytical tools and formulas to get to a sales price before we list a business; but there's a pretty simple formula we do in our head to see if it's a listing we should consider taking in the first place:

  1. Figure out what the annual sales are.
  2. Figure what the owner(s) take home annually as a paycheck, PLUS an estimate of the personal things they write off.  This gives us a broad idea of that seller's discretionary earnings (SDE).
  3. Multiply the SDE by 2.0 to 2.5.

That new number will give you an idea of a price range a potential buyer would be willing to pay for your small business.  Of course it's more involved once we sit down with the financials and decide on a final listing price; but knowing this figure will help you decide if you want to at least move forward with your options.
